Art & Music at AIR Studio & Gallery, Saturday, Sept. 29

Join us for the opening reception of our 5th Annual Group Show, as the 15 artist members of AIR display paintings, photography and sculptural work in our beautiful gallery space in downtown Glencoe, IL.

We are excited to welcome the trio “Going Great,” who will play a set at 6pm in the gallery! “Going Great” is one Mary Beth, two Davids, three guitars (one homemade), and a trumpet. They’re singer-curators of pop and rock tunes ranging from the slightly familiar to the not-at-all familiar. Fun and harmonies are also on the program.

Light snacks will be served.

AIR Member Dr. Moore Brings “Girl Power” to the Studio!

Artist and retired school-superintendent Dr. Valorie Moore recently held an art workshop for a “Girl Power” group she and other parents and professionals from Chicago’s north side formed to mentor young girls aged 6-8. The four girls and their moms gathered at the Artists-in-Residence (A.I.R.) Artspace and Gallery at 348 Tudor Court in Glencoe on a sunny afternoon in July to make art together in a “real art studio.”

Artists-in-Residence is an association of 15 local artists including Dr. Moore. Dr. Moore works on site to create her realistic oil paintings. Member artists work and display art for sale in a light-filled storefront space across the street from Writer’s Theatre in downtown Glencoe. Since 2013, A.I.R. has existed as a supportive work and gallery space for local artists.

Dr. Moore shared images of artworks with the girls attending the workshop and together they created one large work from the individual pieces they created. The artistic experience was followed by snacks and the added bonus of a visit to Friends’ Park across the street.

The “Girl Power” group was inspired by the desire to nurture the self-esteem, emotional well-being, and academic power of young girls as they learn about various topics in society from a social, activist and innovative perspective. Their goal is to empower the girls by exposing them to STEAM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), authors, and educational events, while teaching them to stand up against bullying and other negative social forces.

Research shows that empowering young girls between the ages of 6 to 8 better prepares them to cope with life, to build good self-esteem and self-love before entering middle school, where many of the social, emotional and self-esteem issues appear with the onset of adolescence.
